Just a simple idea. Now we’re running with it.
In 2019, Father James Schultz was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s Parish and Shrine in Oswego, NY in the diocese of Syracuse. Since the beginning of his priesthood (and before) he had a strong devotion to Our Lady, particularly the Brown Scapular.
At his new parish, there was a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. He took this as a sign of the importance of the Brown Scapular in his ministry and started to promote the Brown Scapular.
Just an Inspiration
At first Fr. Schultz started making scapulars by hand and promoting scapular-making workshops in his parish and in surrounding parishes. He would preach and tell others about the importance of the Brown Scapular, encouraging everyone to make this devotion a part of their spiritual life.
Over time this grew into an apostolate, with the help of family members and friends, including a brother who is also a priest in New Hampshire, Fr. Schultz began to see the spread of this devotion as crucial for our time.
Why?
The Brown Scapular is a sign of devotion to Our Lady. It’s a daily reminder to pray to Mary and live for her. As Catholics, we know that the fastest way to Jesus is through his mother. The Brown Scapular is a daily encouragement in our spiritual life and brings us closer every day to God.
Our Lady promised that everyone who dies wearing the Brown Scapular will not experience the fires of hell. That’s not because the scapular is magic. Rather it's because it’s a sacramental that disposes us to grace. Any Christian who sincerely desires to love God will be given the grace to follow him through the Brown Scapular.
Do as she says
Mary has promised it, and the Church has promoted it through the centuries. While many people wear the Brown Scapular, there are so many Catholics today who still don’t know about it. And we want to change that. We believe that this treasure of tradition has been kept far too long in the Church’s attic, and it’s time to expose the world to it again.
So many people today sincerely desire God. As great as sin grows in the world, the desire for God in the human heart can never be extinguished. And yet we must face the reality of how much temptation there is to turn from God. How influential the evil one appears in today’s culture.
A garment of grace
The Brown Scapular is the perfect devotion for the Christian soul in today’s world, and we believe it may be the most important work in the Church today. The sincere soul seeking God often feels alone in such a hostile world and needs the protection of the Brown Scapular.
How many saints have found holiness simply by taking the words of Our Lord or Our Lady to heart?
Mary promised that you will avoid hell if you wear the Brown Scapular.
Mary said at Fatima that she wants everyone to wear the Brown Scapular.
That’s it.
That’s all that motivates us.
It really is that simple.
What started with a parish priest making scapulars by hand is growing into a movement that can spread to the whole Church.
